What Is EMI?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment. It is the fixed amount a borrower generally pays to a lender every month until the loan is fully repaid.

An EMI usually consists of two components:

  • Principal: The original amount borrowed.
  • Interest: The additional amount charged by the lender for providing the loan.

At the beginning of a loan, a larger portion of the EMI may go towards interest. As the loan progresses, more of the payment generally goes towards the principal.

How to Use Our EMI Calculator

Using the EMI Calculator is very easy. You only need a few basic loan details.

1. Select Your Currency

Choose the currency you want to use for displaying your loan amount and results.

Available options include:

  • PKR – Pakistani Rupee
  • USD – US Dollar
  • GBP – British Pound
  • EUR – Euro
  • AED – UAE Dirham
  • SAR – Saudi Riyal
  • INR – Indian Rupee
  • CAD – Canadian Dollar
  • AUD – Australian Dollar

Note: Changing the currency changes the display currency only. It does not automatically convert an amount from one currency to another.

2. Enter the Loan Amount

Enter the amount you want to borrow.

For example:

PKR 1,000,000

3. Enter the Interest Rate

Enter the annual interest rate offered by your lender.

For example:

12% per year

4. Select the Loan Tenure

Choose whether you want to enter your loan tenure in:

  • Years
  • Months

For example, a 5-year loan can be entered as 5 years, while a 60-month loan can be entered as 60 months.

5. Calculate Your EMI

Click Calculate EMI and the calculator will instantly show:

  • Monthly EMI
  • Total interest payable
  • Total payment
  • Principal amount
  • Visual payment breakdown

How Is EMI Calculated?

The standard EMI formula is:

EMI = P × R × (1 + R)ⁿ ÷ [(1 + R)ⁿ − 1]

Where:

  • P = Principal loan amount
  • R = Monthly interest rate
  • N = Total number of monthly payments

For example, if you borrow PKR 1,000,000 at an annual interest rate of 12% for 5 years, the calculator converts the annual interest rate into a monthly rate and calculates the estimated monthly EMI.

Why Use an EMI Calculator?

An EMI calculator can make loan planning much easier. Before applying for a loan, you can estimate how much you may need to pay every month and compare different loan amounts or repayment periods.

It can help you:

  • Plan your monthly budget
  • Estimate loan affordability
  • Compare different loan tenures
  • Understand total interest costs
  • Calculate your expected monthly payment
  • Plan before applying for a loan

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EMI Calculator?

An EMI Calculator is an online tool that estimates your monthly loan instalment using the loan amount, interest rate, and repayment tenure.

What does EMI stand for?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment.

What information do I need to calculate EMI?

You generally need three main details: the loan amount, annual interest rate, and loan tenure.

Can I calculate EMI in PKR?

Yes. You can select PKR (Pakistani Rupee) from the currency selector and enter your loan amount.

Can I use this calculator for USD loans?

Yes. Select USD from the currency dropdown. The calculator will display the calculated figures in USD.

Does changing the currency convert my money?

No. The currency selector changes the currency used for displaying the calculation. It does not perform exchange-rate conversion.

Is EMI the same for every month?

Under a standard fixed-rate EMI structure, the scheduled EMI is generally the same each month. The proportion going towards principal and interest can change over time.

Does a longer tenure reduce monthly EMI?

Generally, yes. A longer tenure spreads the repayment over more months, which can reduce the monthly EMI. However, it may increase the total interest paid.

How can I reduce my total interest?

A shorter repayment tenure and a lower interest rate can generally reduce the total interest cost, although the best option depends on your financial situation and lender terms.

Is this EMI Calculator accurate?

The calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on the information entered. Actual loan payments may differ because lenders may apply processing fees, taxes, insurance, variable rates, or other charges.
